South Fountain

This photograph of the South Fountain was taken by Erik Kvalsvik in 1996. The Japanese threadleaf maple sits to its right. The South Fountain was built in the 1850s, replaced in 1876 as a grand basin, and expanded with sixteen water jets in 1886, its water spray powered by steam. The Japanese threadleaf maple was planted by First Lady Frances Folsom Cleveland in 1893.
